Denise Farquharson’s Live Your Dreams Goals & Plans is a Finalist in the 2008 USA Book News Awards in the category of Self-Help: General. Congratulations to Denise!

Hot on the heels of this award, she was also featured in the UK’s Coventry Telegraph. Read the article below:

Coventry author faces death - and telling children about her life
Sep 22 2008 By SiâN Powell

FACING death made Coventry author Denise Farquharson realise just what she wanted to tell her children about her life.
An undiagnosed illness in 2005 left the 40-year-old mother of three wondering who would tell her children about her achievements if she were to die. So she set about creating a new self-help motivational book, called Picture Your Dreams.
Denise, of Longford, said: “I was quite ill in 2005 and I was not diagnosed with anything at all. I was off work for almost a year, I was stopped from driving and kept fainting. At times I thought I was going to die. It was then that I realised I had three kids, and even though I’ve done lots of things with my life I did not know whether they would know about it. “I went looking for some sort of book to put together everything I’d done but I could not find anything so I decided to put it together myself.”

Denise, whose maiden name is Anderson, attended Coventry’s Blue Coat School before moving to Coventry University to complete a computer studies course. Picture Your Dreams encourages people to think of an image of what they want to achieve, and to focus on identifying how they set about achieving that goal. Denise said: “You will end up with a book of 20-plus reminders of everything you have achieved in your life.” Now recovered from her mystery illness, Denise, who works as a software release manager for Severn Trent, is hoping to take her self-help book to America in the future - and will soon be available for talks to inspire and help people to find their dreams.

* PICTURE Your Dreams is available online and in bookshops, priced £12.99.

Author: Scott L. Weeden
Book: High Times and Low Lifes at the Sand Bar Town Saloons

Trafford author Scott L. Weeden received the following review in Oklahoma state newspaper, NewsOK on September 24th, 2008:

Historical fiction: Bar drew rowdy elements before statehood

Oklahomans interested in the life and times surrounding preparations for the run of 1889 across the South Canadian River will delight in Scott L. Weeden’s novel, “High Times and Low Lifes at the Sand Bar Town Saloons” (Trofford Publishing, $17.95 softcover, $27.95 hardcover).

It is a historical western novel about brothers D.W. and Linc Sweden, who wandered into Indian Territory from Ohio, trying to get away from the press of civilization. When they met on Red Hill, a spot of clay north of Purcell, they watched the railroaders sink a log for a bridge and battle quicksand.

D.W., who was adept at brewing “fire water,” viewed the gathering settlers, and those who would supply them, as “fruit ripe for the pluckin’.”

Oklahoma Territory across the river in Lexington had open bars, but the area of Purcell was the railroad station in Indian Territory which was legally dry. D.W. could see the path worn across the dry river bed leading to the city of saloons. He talked his brother into joining him in building a structure on the sand bar to intercept the Purcell settlers and weary travelers getting off the train seeking drinks, games and entertainment.

He kept his still hidden, and it was seldom found to be busted up by the marshals. They met a lady of some experience, who was being ejected from a stagecoach in Purcell for rowdy behavior, and persuaded her to join them in their endeavor by adding rooms to their Sand Bar Saloon. The bar was instantly successful, but it also attracted federal marshals and desperado bands, such as the Dalton, James and Younger gangs, to the area. The gangs expected banks and railroads to be easy picking.

Just when their business was doing well, they were inconvenienced by high water and a Bible-thumping preacher, the loud-voiced, white-haired Ben Fountains, and his wife, Beverly. The Purcell Register kept a well-documented record of the attitude of the citizens toward the sand bar saloon and activities there.

Weeden tells an exciting story about the era when the first bridge was built between Indian and Oklahoma territories. His characters speak in the language of that time, using idioms that have been long forgotten. He was born in Purcell, and this book is his first novel. It should not be his last. It is great reading about early territorial history.

— Russ Long

Moses Ludel’s first novel, Indra’s Net, has received a four star review from ForeWord Magazine. ForeWord is the industry go-to for authoritative reviews of independently published books, and Trafford knows that a four star rating means Ludel has penned a true gem in his novel that addresses family, culture, and the bonds of history. From ForeWord:

Author Ludel is one of the few modern authors to truly understand the vicious contempt in which the Imperial Japanese held enemy soldiers who surrendered in particular, and non-Japanese races in general. The descriptions of battlefield conduct are chilling. However, the anguish of Japanese-Americans interned in camps in the United States is just as convincingly written. The omniscient narrator of Indra’s Net is not only all-seeing, but all-compassionate, but without falling into sentimentality[…]this comprehensive novel reads like a history book without the boring bits, covering much of the ground of the world’s past—some of it scarcely disturbed by American boots. Teachers and librarians should find it of particular interest. An engaging, satisfying, and richly lengthy read.

Congratulations to Mr. Ludel. Read the review in full here.

Three Trafford authors are recipients of the 2008 Premier Book Awards! This is a the first year of the award and it is causing quite a stir in independent publishing. Sincere congratulations to authors John Warner, Graham Clews, and Kenn Joubert for their outstanding achievement. From the Premier Book Awards website:

The primary goal of Premier Book Awards is to recognize authors and publishers for superior achievements in their chosen genre. The secondary goal is to assure readers that a book chosen to receive a Premier Book Award is truly of outstanding merit and well worth adding to their libraries. We believe we have achieved both goals.[…]We highly recommend that you check out the titles on the list and read the books chosen for an award. They are all a wonderful reading experience.
