Book: Forgotten Conscripts: Prelude to Palestine’s Struggle for Survival
Author: Eric Lowe
The following note by Brian Sewell appeared in London’s Evening Standard’s Best Books of 2007 review, page 41.
‘Among all the heavyweights, two slim privately printed paperbacks have touched me most. In Forgotten Conscripts (Trafford Publishing, £13.50), Eric Lowe has compiled an astonishing record of Britain’s humiliating withdrawal from what is now Israel in 1945-48 - mandatory reading for every member of the House of Commons.’

Book: Jewels for Children
Author: Brij Goberdhan
Canadian author Brij Goberdhan, originally of Trinidad, has received a review in the Caribbean Camera for his book Jewels for Children. The full text is below:
Caribbean Camera Review
By Jasminee Sahoye
A love of kids and writing is what inspired a new self-published book that aims to inspire and teach children. Jewels for Children is a labour of love for author, Trinidad-born, Brij Goberdhan, who spent 16 months writing it and his own funds to publish it. Among the stories are The Wrath of Mrs Gilbarker, The Big Hockey Game, The Sports Tournament and the Troublemakers, all of which the author says are based on experiences with which kids can easily identify. He told The Camera that he wanted to write stories for children because of the changes he has seen in the society. “It is clearly evident that something is missing at the childhood level of education in our society right now so I wanted to produce something that could be very useful to the parent and the child as far as adult education of human values are concerned.” He describes the book as “filled with fund and lessons for life” and that “the true jewels that make us really shine are hidden in our behaviour. We shine when these jewels such as truth, good conduct, kindness, compassion, doing the right thing, helping others and speaking with respect are worn as part of our character.” The book emphasizes human values and according to Goberdhan, the collection of short stories follows the adventure of three siblings of different ages, Lilly, Mike and Angel, growing up as loving, honest, happy and caring children. The illustrator is David Riolo, a teeanger at Mayfield Secondary. “I wanted a child participation in this and I thought it would be good, there were many adult illustrators, but I want to keep the concept of it being dedicated to children.” An insurance broker by profession, Goberdhan said the stories would appeal to all children regardless of their heritage and background. Goberdhan is trying to get the book introduced into the school system and has sent copies to the Peel Board, the Catholic Board and the Brampton Library. He also is exploring the possibility of corporate sponsors who would buy books for children in third world countries to help them improve their literacy skills.
Trafford published the book and anyone interested in obtaining a copy can order on-line at www.trafford.com or contact the author at 905-799-9170.
